“There's no use mincing words: The state Taxation and Budget Reform Commission is an utter failure. That is, unless you support piecemeal dismantling of the state public education system. This commission's proposed constitutional amendments -- coupled with the Legislature's ominous budget cuts and siphoning of public funds to private schools -- could seriously erode the state's constitutional mandate to provide a uniform, high-quality public education system. Florida -- already near the bottom of national rankings in its support for public schools -- could easily end up dead last among states. And the consequences could weaken the state's long-term economic stability as young working parents look elsewhere to rear and educate their children.
