Lawmakers to focus on tightening teacher ethics lawsTALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Putting parents and police on a panel that disciplines teachers and penalizing school officials who fail to report misconduct are among recommendations in a teacher ethics report embraced by a Senate committee Wednesday.
The Prekindergarten-12th Grade Education Committee directed Senate staffers who conducted the study to draft a proposed committee bill based on their recommendations.
Other staff suggestions include prohibiting confidentiality agreements that keep a teacher's misconduct a secret and requiring school districts to report every teacher firing to the state regardless of cause....
Staffers also recommended that laws be amended to include penalties - fines, firing, license suspensions and revocations - for officials including school board members and school superintendents who fail to report actual or alleged misconduct to the state.
