“Will legislators listen? Thousands of parents, teachers, students and other supporters of education converged on Tallahassee on Wednesday, finally taking their anger over school cuts where it belongs: before legislators. Many of those lawmakers spent the last decade bleeding state revenue in the name of low taxes while failing utterly, like slacker students who refuse to plan ahead, to prepare for difficult times. Those difficult times are here. Lawmakers were self-serving in the years leading to the often-predicted real estate collapse. They're now proving stubborn to the point of willful negligence as they continue to find ways to evade their responsibility. During Wednesday's rally, some lawmakers from Miami-Dade, according to The Miami Herald, ‘shifted blame to school boards and told parents and students that's where they should direct their anger.’ But local school boards' options are narrowly dependent on the state's funding formula, itself dependent on state revenue. For legislators to shift responsibility adds cowardice to irresponsibility.”
