Florida's graduation rate hits record level, state says, even with GED's excluded this year
Florida's high school graduation rate hit a record 76.3 percent this year, even as recipients of GED's were removed from the calculation, the Florida Department of Education announced this morning.
The department said Florida's graduation rate for 2009 was about 3 percentage points higher than last year's and more than six percentage points better than the rate in 2005, based on the same GED-removed calculation.
Black and Hispanic students, who typically lag behind when it comes to earning diplomas, made the biggest gains, the department said.
"Florida's education system continues to be a rising star in our nation, and our teachers and social leaders should be commended for their extraordinary efforts," said Gov. Charlie Crist. "Our graduation rate is one of many recent measurements showing the progress we are making to ensure every student is capable of academic success."
