Union locals urged not to participate in schools' applications for fed funds

Lansing -- The Michigan Education Association has decided not to support the state's Race to the Top application and issued a memo Wednesday urging union locals not to participate.

The statement by MEA President Iris Salters came as Michigan officials rush to meet a Jan. 19 deadline to apply for about $400 million from the federal program. If the state wins the money in a nationwide competition, half of it would go to local school districts and the balance to the state Department of Education for statewide reform initiatives.

The department has received memoranda of understanding from 715 school districts and charter schools agreeing to participate -- but just 42 of those were signed by union officials, state officials said. ...
