Is it just me, or does it seem that the players are going out of their way to justify their actions?

Talk about spin!

Race to the Top: Other districts were too late, DOE says

The Seminole County school district wasn’t the only one re-considering its Race to the Top decision after the state’s Jan. 12 deadline.

Others, including Broward, were, too. Which raised questions about whether Seminole got special treatment (see St. Petersburg Times blog post here and a South Florida Sun-Sentinel story here).

But the Florida Department of Education says it was only a matter of timing. Seminole was late but got its paperwork to Tallahassee on Friday.

Broward was one of the districts still involved in discussions with Education Commissioner Eric Smith and Chancellor Frances Haithcock as late as this past weekend, said Tom Butler, department spokesman.

Broward (and others) were told that if the paperwork was sent in Monday, it was still doable, Bulter said. But the district said it couldn’t make a final decision until Tuesday — and that was simply too late because the application was due in Washington, D.C. by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“It really does come down to a time issue,” Butler said. If Broward or others had turned in the paperwork even by Monday “we would have worked tirelessly to get them invovled,” he added.

Broward School Board Maureen Dinnen had a different take, according to the Sun-Sentinel. “I am so upset with these people,” Dinnen said. “I wouldn’t buy a used car from them.”

On the other hand, don’t teachers often tell students when they give out assignments that the due date is the due date and late papers or projects won’t be accepted?
