Houghton Mifflin tool can help win federal funds
February 2, 2010 09:17 AM

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a Boston publisher whose product lineup includes textbooks and educational aids, said that its curriculum data-analysis tool is helping California schools to apply for some of the $700 million available in the federal government's Race to the Top educational stimulus funding.

To qualify for Race to the Top funding, schools must demonstrate that they are advancing reforms in four areas, and one of those areas is "building data systems that measure student growth and success and inform teachers and principals about how they can improve instruction," Houghton Mifflin Harcourt said in a press release.

The company said its DataDirector digital solution is well suited to that task.

"Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is committed to working with school districts in California and across the United States to meet their unique needs for integrated teaching and learning programs and tools that support achievement," Mike Lavelle, president of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's K-12 program, said in a statement. "DataDirector is the only resource of its kind and helps to make the educational process more effective for teachers and students."

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has been in the news of late. Last month, its corporate parent, Education Media and Publishing Group Ltd., confirmed that it is in the midst of a restructuring that aims to lower its debt. To read a Globe story on that, please click here.
