Superintendent Bill Vogel is turning up the accountability pressure on Seminole County schools by expecting them to get straight A's when the state hands out its annual report cards in 2010.
This year, he wants Seminole schools to get nothing worse than a B. And to make his point, Vogel is even declaring an "unofficial" end to the school year in March when students finish the statewide exams that determine school grades. Officially, school doesn't end until June.
Some say the ambitious goals are a bold move to push already good county schools toward excellence.
Others say it is simply FCAT gone wild at the expense of other priorities.
"It's about proficiency. It's about all students realizing their maximum potential," said Vogel, who has told school principals to push hard toward improved student scores on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, which is the basis for the state's letter grades each summer. ...
