Who'll be the next Florida DOE Commissioner of Education?

Leslie Postal and Dave Weber pose this question and solicit comments on The School Zone Blog.

"The search is on for Florida's next commissioner of education. The first want ad has run in the Wall Street Journal. Applicants have until July 13 to turn in their resumes. The question is, just who will want the job?

So far, there are no applicants, though officials expect most candidates won't officially declare their interest until close to the deadline.

Florida's State Board of Education has the hiring power when it comes to the state's top education leader, and it is doing a national search, with the help of an outside firm, to find its next commissioner. This differs from last time the commissioner's seat was vacant. Then the board simply picked then Gov. Jeb Bush's right-hand education man, John Winn, for the job. Winn retired in February....

The new commissioner is expected to take over in the fall. He or she will inherit a department still overseeing Bush-era reforms -- and dealing with the mess of last year's third-grade FCAT scores. It's a job with the potential for a lot of influence, yet also one not really on the public's radar. People tend to care more about their local school boards and superintendents. And in recent years, if they got mad about state policy, they unleashed most of their anger at Bush, the face of Florida's school accountability program.

So it will be interesting to see how much interest there is in this new commissioner."
