No amendments for SB 6? Well, maybe
April 01, 2010
Florida's Republican legislative leaders have made clear they don't want any changes to SB 6 as it moves through the House. They want no opportunity for the bill to die in a Senate revote, as some watchers have suggested might occur, if House members give the thumbs up with amendments.
House Education Policy Council chairman Will Weatherford, whose panel hears the bill next on Monday, tells the Gradebook that the ban on amendments isn't complete, though.
"Someone would have to prove to us that what they have is better than what is in the bill," said Weatherford, who's in line to become speaker in 2012: Striking the entire bill and adding language that prohibits performance pay for teachers wouldn't pass his muster, for instance.
There's no point in bouncing the bill to the Senate just for the sake of bouncing the bill, Weatherford said. But if it can be improved, perhaps it will be worth it. Many items, he added, can be fixed in future years, though. So don't look for much more than discussion during Monday's eight-hour meeting.
