VETO!

The news flashed across Twitter, Facebook and the blogs before the ink was dry on the Governor Crist’s veto message. Cheers rose in the schools and even some government buildings. We are grateful that the balance the designer of our system of government envisioned stopping the blatant abuse of power that we saw embodied in the ramrod passage of SB6.

Crist did the right thing for the students, parents and teachers of this state. It was a brave act yet has cost him dearly in some of his Party members’ eyes. But the people of Florida were celebrating.

The political implications for Crist’s veto are vast. He is at odds with his Party’s leadership. What seems like ages ago, pundits were convinced he was a shoe-in as the next U.S. Senator from Florida. That lead has vaporized. His future as a Republican candidate is looking like a Don Quixote quest – but the enemies Crist faces are very real. Yet strange things happen all the time, especially in Florida politics. No one knows the next chapter of this very unique election year!

We don’t believe that the House and Senate have the votes to over-ride a veto, but we do have to remain vigilant since they could sneak things in other bills before the end of session on April 29. Stay tuned!
